Breve is a Contemporary Jazz (or as they like to call it, “Caribbean Pop”) band, formed right here in the nature Isle of Dominica in the year 2012. The band is made up of six members in total: Gomez Drigo, Kenrick Lawrence, Jussi Paavola, Marxiam Smith, Jade Leatham and Wayne Henry. Breve’s music features a mix of African and Caribbean influence with new and interesting elements of jazz and pop that aren’t typical to the Caribbean region, and the result is a breathtaking blend of sound. Their unique vibe has quickly garnered them popularity in Dominica and they’re gaining recognition throughout the Caribbean. The piece I’ve chosen to critique is their first recorded track as well as one of their most popular, “Run Away”. This song was written as a homage to those who suffered loss at the hands of Tropical Storm Erika. The song begins with:
“Come run away with me
We can bury our tears in the sea
And leave sadness right there on the shore
If you would give me your hand
We could write our names in the sand
And we’ll smile like we used to before”
The lyrics are simple yet deeply emotional and appeal to the listener’s senses with the use of imagery and metaphors. It paints a picture within the mind that’s almost as if you’re there experiencing the moment for yourself. Basically what I take from these lyrics is an escape from the sad memories and the ascend to a happier place where you can lose yourself in the moment, and for that moment things will be like they use to before everything went south.
The song continues with:
“We don’t have to talk about it
We don’t have to think and we can
Go to a place outta time and space
And maybe there we can laugh about it
We’ll laugh like before”
This enforces the concept of escaping from the harsh reality of life. “We don’t have to talk about it, we don’t have to think” Coming to terms with the situation at hand can be painful but if you just put it to the back of your mind and pretend you’re somewhere else, even if it’s just for a while, perhaps in that place you can experience happiness in spite of the circumstances.
“Nobody else needs to know
It’s our secret wherever we go
We can pack up the car and escape
Or maybe we’ll sail away
We can be someone else for the day
When the pain is just too much to take”
Here we see more imagery that relates to the need to get away from everything in order to heal. When the pain becomes overwhelming, you disconnect from that feeling of hopelessness. A mental ideology which is represented in a physical sense through these verses.
Overall, it is a very well written and beautiful song with a deeper meaning than just any old ordinary tune. It may not be a party song but one can definitely appreciate the message and delivery of the lyrics. The vocals are amazing, and the backing instrumental holds and enchanting quality that captures your attention and keeps it. Certainly a song to be listened through from beginning to end. A job well done by Breve.
