The area identified as the location of an international airport for Dominica is in the process of being acquired by government according to the Hon Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Roosevelt Skerrit.

He posted a video to his Facebook page on Thursday, Jan 30 detailing the work which he says is ongoing behind the scenes to secure the land in Eden, Wesley.

Owners of property earmarked for use for the airport project have been given the option of a land swap.

Hon Skerrit explained, “They have identified Government-owned land in the Wesley area that we will be swapping with those interested in remaining in Wesley…where you can rebuild your home and enjoy the benefits of the international airport and be in your community.”

Some property owners will have the option of swapping land for a new house

“We are also set to build 70 residences in Wesley. That is close to the North-east Comprehensive High School where homes will be built for people interested in getting homes in the swap.

He also says China’s commitment to financing the project is firm, and an International Airport Development Committee will be sanctioned by cabinet next week.

Based on those and other factors, the hon prime minister believes remarkable progress is being made on the airport project.

Hon Skerrit says the willingness of the property owners has been reassuring.

“I am certainly grateful to them. That was always the government’s concern: the level of cooperation that we would get.”
