The Roseau City Council is having a hard time collecting property taxes from its debtors.
Dominica Vibes met with the new Mayor of the City, Her Worship Ermine Royer on Tuesday, January 7th who revealed that as the council’s source of income, property rates are critical to the upkeep of the city and the operation of the council.
“I want to take his opportunity to appeal to all property owners within the boundaries of the city of Roseau to pay their land and house taxes,” she says.
“Come to the office to make an arrangement to settle your debts. We stress on that because the money that you pay helps us to enhance the city and pay our workers… it’s the source of our income.”
City Clerk, Thomas Baptiste explained that right after 2017’s Hurricane Maria, property owners were granted an amnesty period as the nation recovered. That period has ended and the taxes are due.
“The funds that we had were depleted because there was no income. At that time, we couldn’t impose rates because everybody had been affected by the storm. Hurricane Maria damaged 98% of buildings in the city ,” Baptiste revealed.
“The largest revenue source for the Council is house and land rates. were affected. It has been over two years now and so we are urging people who are in arrears to make arrangements to make their payments.”
Both city officials insist that the body will be forced to take legal action if these appeals are ignored.
He says legitimate cases for waiver will be considered by the council.
The municipality is composed of communities from Fond Cole To Castle Comfort, and Louisville, Copthall to those bordering the sea.
That ncludes Fortune, Kings Hill, Morne Bruce, Elmshall, Bath Estate, St Aroment, Goodwill, Stockfarm, Glasgow, Pottersville, Newtown and Citronier.
