President of the Dominica Nurses Association, Mignon Rolle-Shillingford is looking forward to this year, 2020 the Year of the Nurse and Midwife to educate both nurses and the public on the profession’s significance.
She says with time, she hopes to bring back the high esteem that nurses once enjoyed and the respect that she feels now has been lost.
“I can remember, as a young nurse,” she said, “coming out in white and I would not spend five minutes by the roadside. Somebody would stop, turn around and pick me up.
“These things need to come back because nurses still love and care for all our clients and we want the best outcomes for them.”
Shillingford says this year will see nurses being reminded that this calling of caring for others is not one to be taken lightly.
“Nursing is a privilege,” she insists. “It is a privilege to be a nurse and to care for God’s people and not the other way around. Our clients are not dependent on us. We need to bring back that culture.
“We want to showcase the importance and significance…of who we are. The culture that has changed a bit, we can bring it back to what it once was.”
