Following four terms as Speaker of the House of Parliament, Alix Boyd-Knights may be succeeded by Joseph Isaac.
Isaac’s nomination was announced by the Honorable Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit at the swearing in ceremony of Cabinet ministers on Tuesday 17th December 2019.
Isaac, a former parliamentarian for the Roseau Central Constituency on a United Workers Party ticket, transitioned into the Dominica Labour Party as candidate for the Roseau North Constituency contesting against his former party colleague, Daniel Lugay.
Unfortunately, Isaac failed to capture that seat for the DLP and was defeated by Lugay in the 2019 general elections.
The Hon Prime Minister is putting him up as his pick for House Speaker. Since the DLP holds the majority in the House, it is likely that Isaac will get the post.
The Speaker of the House of Parliament is responsible for the management and general administration of the House, ensuring that rules of procedure are followed.
The Speaker is elected by the House of Assembly at its first sitting after a general election.
Spectators erupted in applause at the announcement of Isaac’s nomination.
Meanwhile, Honorable Lady Catherine Daniel was nominated as Deputy speaker of the House of Assembly and according to Honorable Skerrit, ” will also be chairperson of the commission, honorary classification and modernization of the public service.”
