President of Dominica, Charles A. Savarin

His Excellency the President of Dominica, who has been called on for some time now to act in his power to pause elections, is giving reason for his decision not to.

In an address aired last evening, President Charles Savarin said that the provision in the constitution which grants him this power requires that he be personally convinced that satisfactory notice was not given.

“That subsection… requires the President to be satisfied that the Electoral Lists for all constituencies, or for any particular constituency will not be printed before the day appointed…for the holding of the poll; or that essential electoral supplies or materials will not be available in adequate quantities upon the day of the poll.

“The President has been assured that all is ready for the holding of the poll.”
