To raise awareness of child abuse in Dominica, the Dominica Bar Association (DBA) is set to host a debate among Dominica State College students, on the topic ‘Dominica should have a sex offender’s register’
Speaking with Dominica Vibes, secretary of the DBA, Yakima Cuffy stated that the debate is one of several activities of the DBA to increase awareness of child abuse, highlighting its recently launched the Child Abuse Prevention Project (CAP) project.
” As a Bar, we recognize the need to tackle the issue of child abuse prevention due to the escalating number of cases of child abuse on island. As part of this project, we have decided to hold several activities geared toward raising awareness and getting stakeholders, particularly the schools and the youth of Dominica involved, and this debate is one of such activities,” she disclosed.
She says the association wants to protect all Dominica’s children, encouraging all to do the same, informing that, “the overarching message of this campaign is that our children are our nation’s future and therefore we need to take a stand now to ensure that they are protected.”
Cuffy adds, “the late Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa said ‘there can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way it treats its children.’
“The Dominica Bar Association therefore seeks to take a stance to ensure that our children are treated with the love and respect that they deserve.”
The debate is carded for Thursday 21st November 2019 at the UWI open campus from 7:00 p.m
