Dominica Labour Party Candidate for the Roseau Central Constituency, Melissa Poponne Skerrit has hosted her 5th annual back to school event, encouraging students in her constituency to prioritize education.
The DLP candidate, through her Melissa Skerrit Foundation donated a total of fifty scholarships and one hundred and fifty school packages to students of preschool, primary and secondary school.
In her address to these students and their parents on Wednesday 11th September 2019, at the DLP office in Roseau, Poponne-Skerrit made clear her desire to see all students excel.
“You have to bear the responsibility for your education. Get to school on time, complete your given assignments, pay attention to your teachers, listen to your parents and put the hard work that it takes to succeed. We can give you all the needs however, the responsibility is on you to use the tools you have been given to gain a sound education,” she remarked.
“Failure, relaxation or giving up is not an option this year,” she urged the students.
“Our country’s future is in your hands and we are relying on you to develop yourself and in doing so develop our country. I expect great things of you so do not let us down…do not let your family, or your country or yourself down. Make us proud, I know that you can do it!”
Meanwhile, Mrs. Skerrit also encouraged parents to play their necessary role in the children’s education.
“We as parents need to engage in instilling a sense of excellence in our children. We need to set goals with our children and ensure that they are achieved. If we encourage that attitude in our community and our community is supportive then I have no doubt that we will raise top achievers,” she advised.
