The international Organization for Migration, in partnership with the Waitukubuli Artist Association (WAA) and the Ministry of Education, has officially launched a Mural Photo Competition.

The competition is being held under the theme, “Preparedness Saves Lives”.

According to IOM’s Communications and Community Engagement Officer, Maxine Alleyne-Esprit, five WAA artists were given the task of designing sketches and inspiring students’ participation to paint murals at five secondary schools depicting disaster preparedness messages to create awareness.

Schools participating are the Saint Mary’s Academy, Dominica Grammar School, Pierre Charles Secondary School, Portsmouth Secondary School and Isaiah Thomas Secondary School.

Esprit explained “the mural photos are  meant to engage the minds of the students in thinking of what they would do to prepare for certain natural hazards, or to respond to them, always with the assertion of the common theme “Preparedness Saves Lives.”

“The competition encourages people to interact with the murals, to take notice of them, to capture the messages and to share them on social media.   It will also link people with the Facebook page at IOM Dominica, where we share other preparedness messages and information.  Plus, it will be fun!” she said.

According to Esprit, “the person who posts the mural-photo on the IOM Dominica Facebook page with the correct hashtags, and following the rules…gets the most LIKES and SHARES before end of July 15-2019 … will win $300.” The artist who composed the mural will win $200.

This activity is the final under the USAID Support Emergency Preparedness project, and the cost of the murals as well as the prizes, are funded by the USAID donor.

“We are so happy about the lasting impact that these murals will have, and we want to thank the Ministry of Education, the school administrations, and the Waitukubuli Artist Association for partnering with us in this initiative,” Esprit stated.

Meanwhile, Chief Education Officer, Melena Fontaine endorsed the activity on behalf of the Ministry of Education.  She is pleased that it allows students to be involved, and it is in line with the Ministry’s efforts to build capacity within schools in emergency planning and preparedness.

Staff of IOM and members of the WAA are not eligible to win the cash prize of $300, but they can participate.  The “Preparedness Saves Lives” photo competition closes on the 15th of July 2019.
