Dominica Fencing Association hosts Fencing Clinic to promote the sport locally

The Dominica Fencing Association hosted a 2019 Fencing Clinic under the patronage of the Dominica Olympic Committee and the Pan American Fencing Confederation. The clinic was facilitated by Jose Benavides, Technical Sports Coordinator, from May 25th to June 10th 2019. Training was held at the Loubiere resource center daily to educate the fencers on proper form and technique of the sport.

The clinic also focused on preparing the senior fencers for the upcoming international competitions, particularly the Pan American Championship to be held in Canada and the World Championship to be held in Hungary.

During Mr Benavides’visit here, the association also implemented the “Fencing in Schools” Program and presented the sport of fencing to four schools on island; namely Orion Academy, Convent Preparatory School, Canefield/Massacre Primary School and Pioneer Preparatory School.

The associating says the program was well received by all the schools and the students expressed keen interest in Fencing. The Dominica Fencing Association 2019 Fencing Clinic was described as a success and culminated with a closing ceremony which was held at the Loubiere Resource Center on June 11th 2019.

In attendance were the President of the Dominica Olympic Committee, Billy Doctrove; Technical Sports Coordinator of the CPE, Jose Benavides; members of the executive of the Jose Benavides; members of the executive of the Dominica Fencing Association; Acting Chairperson of the Loubiere Village Council, Derwin Peltier as well as Fencers and their parents and supporters.

All the participating fencers were presented with certificates of participation. Certificates of Appreciation were also presented to Mr Doctrove on behalf of the Dominica Olympic Committee and to Mr Benavides on behalf the the Pan American Fencing Confederation. In its effort to continue boosting the sport, the Dominica Fencing Association will host a summer camp from August 12th to 17th, 2019.

The association will also host the 1st Nature Island Invitational Tournament from August 19th to 23rd where local Fencers as well as those from around the region will compete.
