Ten students and three teachers will arrive in Dominica from Precheur, Martinique via a gommier fabricated traditional Kalinago Pirogue on Saturday May 25, 2019.

The Belle Etoile Middle School in Martinique will be undertaking a cultural exchange and so will be accomplishing a feat by crossing the channel in a traditional kalinago canoe. The group is scheduled to leave Martinique at 08:00am on Saturday May 25, 2019 and arrive at the Roseau Ferry Terminal at 1:00pm.

This initiative seeks to create awareness among students about the cultural and historical linkages among Caribbean islands as established by the Kalinago during their numerous channel crossings along the island chain.

On this trip, students are scheduled to visit the Kalinago Territory, where they will get an appreciation for the Kalinago culture and will participate in various craft workshops such as laouma reed basket weaving, cassava flour making, traditional dance and calabash painting. Students will also visit the North East Comprehensive School where they will participate in a creole / English exchange.

This group will be led by Mrs. Mauriol Annie-Claude, history and geography teacher at the Belle Etoile Middle School in St. Joseph, Martinique.   This visit was facilitated by Dominica’s Honorary Consul based in Martinique and Discover Dominica Authority.
