The Dominica Labour Party (DLP) has decided to push back the launch of candidate Gretta Roberts which was scheduled initially for Grand Fond on Sunday 14th April .
The event was postponed after listening to the appeals of the clergy and faithfuls of the local Catholic Church who have noted that April 14 is also Palm Sunday, one of the holiest days on the church’s calendar.
Campaign manager of the DLP, Vince Henderson said , “Once those calls came, the decision was an easy one for a political party that listens to the wider community, and that is respectful to customs and observances,”
“We were absolutely in no doubt that the decision is an appropriate one,” he said, noting that it was enthusiastically supported by political leader Dr Roosevelt Skerrit and the candidate Gretta Roberts.
“The change in no way puts the campaign at a disadvantage, because of the enthusiasm on the ground for the candidacy of Comrade Gretta,” Henderson noted.
“Actually we are very excited with the feedback and the acceptance of the candidate. She is bringing a new energy to our work in the area. That coupled with the DLP’s history of delivery and the sterling leadership of Comrade Skerrit puts us in a very good space,” he added.
“Of course we are cognizant of the work ahead and we will continue not to take the people there, or anywhere for that matter, for granted,” Henderson also said.
Asked to comment, Comrade Roberts said: “I fully endorse the change, understanding the circumstances. But we continue to work and we continue to plan and we are ready for the road once the central executive decides on the new date.
The launch is now likely to take place on Sunday April 28, 2019.
