The Office of Disaster Management (ODM) participated in CARIBE WAVE 2019 exercise last week.
The ODM tested its operational lines of communications with major stakeholders responsible for emergency response.
The purpose of this exercise was to practice and evaluate the operations of the CARIBE-EWS Tsunami Warning System along the coasts of the Caribbean and adjacent regions. It also provided an opportunity to evaluate PTWC CARIBE-EWS products and the readiness of emergency management organizations and communities at risk. Other systems to evaluate include: operational lines of communications, tsunami response procedures, evacuation procedures, and promote tsunami preparedness at community level.
Regular exercising of response plans is critical to maintain readiness for an emergency. This exercise will allow an evaluation of both tsunami products associated with volcanic events and Member State/Territory response plans
According to Program Officer at the ODM, Donaldson Fredrick the CARIBE WAVE exercise is held regionally once a year. This year the ODM chose to facilitate this exercise at the Colihaut primary school. Colihaut is area is prone to tsunamis.
