Dominica joins the other Commonwealth Nations in the observation of Commonwealth Day today, Mar. 11, 2019.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Modern Commonwealth.
Commonwealth Day 2019 will be celebrated under the theme “A Connected Commonwealth.”
The Commonwealth of Nations is a voluntary association of 53 sovereign states. Nearly all of them are former British colonies or dependencies of those colonies.
According to Communications Specialist of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, Dionne Durand-Smith, this year’s theme speaks to the commonalities of Commonwealth states. It will get us as a small developing state to think about how we can leverage our membership in the union for the greater good of our countries.
Smith expressed to Vibes News that, this year the members are asked to consider the practical value of how governments and people can collaborate to protect the natural environment and focus on matters of trade and economical development.
In recognition of this day an annual church ceremony is scheduled to take place at the St Gerald’s Hall Cathedral Chapel in Roseau.
At this ceremony, His Excellency Charles Savarin and Mrs Savarin, various ministers of government including the Prime Minister of Dominica Honorable Dr Roosevelt Skerrit and the speaker of the house of assembly will be present.
In addition, there will be presentations by students from various local secondary schools.
Moreover, the President of Dominica His Excellency Charles Savarin will recount a Commonwealth Day Message from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
