A Food Security Pilot program was established in the Roseau South Constituency.
The aim of this program is to increase agricultural production and to place emphasis on the need for food security.
This program was spearheaded by a group of stakeholders from the areas within the Roseau South.
The stakeholders involved in this program are inclusive of: members of the Roseau City Council, members of the Newtown Bois Bois Academy, members of the farmers group in Kingshill, Giraudel and Eggleston, and Senator Jahisiah Benoit care taker of the Roseau South.
In an interview with Vibes News, Senator Benoit said planning for this initiative began in October 2018. It was officially launched earlier this month.
The purpose of developing this program was to ensure that there will be more agricultural production in that area. This is due to the shortage of food and agricultural produce Dominicans faced after the passage of Hurricane Maria.
According Senator Benoit, at the launching 20 farmers benefited from farming tools and seeds valued over $10,000 from Samaritans Purse.
Later this month, the group of stakeholders are planning to provide farmers in the constituency with seedlings and seeds that will be sourced locally.
