Minister for Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Francine Baron

Minister for Foreign Affairs Senator Francine Baron said the Climate Resilience Executing Agency of Dominica (CREAD) will be key if Dominica is to combat against the negative effects of climate change as the only Caribbean island worse than Dominica was Montserrat which suffered from volcano damage.

Senator Baron made these remarks while presenting the Bill on CREAD for debate at the Parliament on Wednesday 12th December, 2018.

“In the case of Dominica the scientific model show that even at the lowest prediction of a 1 meter sea level rise 14% of our road networks will be lost and food supplies and rural livelihoods in Dominica will be negatively impacted by 5% as a result of the loss of agricultural land.” Senator Baron reported.

She also stated that “an IMF study that was published in 2017 before the passage of hurricane Maria ranked Dominica third [among] small island developing states in disaster damage at a percentage of GDP during the period 1970 to 2016.”
