Men in Dominica were given the opportunity to take part in a Health Fair, held on the ground floor of Government Headquarters on Thursday 22nd November, 2018.
The Health Fair was one of the activities held in observance of International Men’s Day. Men’s Week is being observed locally and organized by the Ministry of Ecclesiastical, Family and Gender Affairs.
International Men’s Day was observed in Dominica and the rest of the world annually on 19th November, 2018 under the theme “Empowering Men to build resilient communities.”
Melissa Morgan of the Bureau of Gender Affairs says the Health Fair for men focuses on screening for men.
“International Men’s Day is built on six pillars and we try to frame our activities this year around the six pillars,” Miss Morgan said.
Miss Morgan said some of the pillars include promoting gender equality, promoting boys and men’s health, creating safer communities among others.
“Health screening is an important part of disease prevention, because when we look at the local statistics and life expectancy the women are out living the men, so we wanted to raise awareness on the importance of regular checkup for men,” Miss Morgan stated.
Miss Morgan said the Men’s Health Fair was specifically to target men and approximately two hundred men were screen at the Men’s Health Fair.
Men were checked on different areas including blood sugar screening, blood pressure screening, among other areas. They were also given a healthy breakfast and educated on health topics.
