Dominica and the rest of the world observed International Men’s Day on Monday 19th November, 2018.
This year Men’s Day is being observed under the theme “Positive Role Model,” as the theme speaks to the importance of men as positive male role models and their contributions to the community and family as our country pushes forward to build a resilient nation.
The objectives of celebrating an International Men’s Day, set out in “The Six Pillars of International Men’s Day”, include focusing on men’s and boys’ health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting male role models.
It is an occasion to highlight discrimination against men and boys and to celebrate their achievements and contributions, in particular for their contributions to community, family, marriage, and child care. The broader and ultimate aim of the event is to promote basic humanitarian values.
President of the National Youth Council of Dominica Paul Baron said men play a significant role in the society. He encourages men to also play a positive role in the lives of young males.
“What we seek to advise men in all walks of life is to seek to have positive influences in the lives of young boys,” Mr. Baron said.
Mr. Baron said NYCD will continue to play their role in assisting young people in Dominica.
“As a council we cannot do it alone and we are calling on the general public to assist in this. We as a council realize the important role that men play in the lives of boys. As a council we will continue to engage the youth and help those who need mentorship at a very tender age so that they can become balance and holistic individuals,” Mr. Baron stated.
