World Diabetes Day will be observed in Dominica and internationally on Wednesday 14th November, 2018.
The World Diabetes Day will be observed under the theme “Diabetes and the Family.”
Health Educator in the Ministry of Health Miss Bernard says diabetes is a very serious disease of the pancreas.
She encouraged persons to take steps to remain healthy and prevent diabetes, by having a balanced diet.
“Of course they can control their diabetes, but in order to control you have to have a healthy diet. When we say healthy diet, we make reference to our six food groups. Half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables and with every meal you should have fruits and vegetables. That is very important,” Bernard noted.
She went to note that an individual should try to have 3 to 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, adding that “this will help control an individual’s diabetes.”
Bernard added that physical activity can also be used as an avenue to control diabetes.
“We also say physical activity can lead to diabetes, but you can combat that with physical activity. You have to exercise more and all of these will help too burn the energy and the extra sugar that we have, and help to control it as well. So with these we can control it,” Miss Bernard added.
