Five lawyers were called to the bar yesterday at a ceremony held in the House of Assembly on 17th October 2018.
Jodie Jodian Luke, Daina Matthew, former Miss Dominica Nadira Lando, Kael Ellon London and Pearlisa Aretha Morvan, were officially robed during the ceremony.
High Court Judge Bernie Stevenson stated that this was a very special day for the young lawyers, adding that completing their studies and being called to the bar was no small feat.
“What you say and what you sign guarantees trust,” she said noting that they are now an officer of the court.
“Having taging your oath as Attorney at law you’ll be given the keys to enter any court in Dominica and let your voice be heard. No one can take it away from you.”
She also reminded them that the lawyer client relationship is most important and that “law is what you do it’s not the sum total of who you are.”
Stevenson pointed out that not all lawyers work in the courtroom, some teach she said or some even run for office while pointing out that being a successful lawyer requires daily work.
“As an Attorney you have the tools to help those in need,” she then said noting that they should take on Pro Bono work. “Being a successful lawyer requires daily work.”
