In observance of the anniversary of Hurricane Maria a tree planting event took place earlier today, Tuesday 18 September 2018, at the Botanic Gardens, Trafalgar and the Emerald Pool.
Destination Marketing Manager at the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) Vicky Chandler told Dominica Vibes the planting of trees will help beautify and replace the trees destroyed by the passage of Hurricane Maria last year.
“We felt that today on the one year anniversary of the passing of Hurricane Maria that we would something significant, of course we know that we lost thousands of trees a year ago and we felt it was important symbolically and literally to do something to mitigate against that event and plant trees which resonate with the concept of the nature island and the regreening of the island”, Miss Chandler said.
The planting of trees will help improve Dominica as a tourist destination she added noting that school children, colleagues from forestry, tour operators and visitors from the Carnival Fascination were invited to assist in the planting of trees.
Some of the trees planted at the three locations include Palm Trees, Bougainvillea, Gold Mount and Tree Ferns.
The Tree Planting event was organized by Discover Dominica Authority and the Forestry Division.
