United Workers Party Senator, Monell Williams Jno. Baptiste has expressed support for government’s plan to implement seven articles under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) as it looks to integrate those with disabilities in mainstream activities.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, in his budget address, revealed that government will move to implement Articles 9 (Accessibility), 11 (Situations of risk and humanitarian emergencies), 21 (Freedom of expression and opinion, and access to information), 25 (Health), 26 (Habilitation and Rehabilitation), 27 (Work and Employment) and 28 (Adequate standard of living and social protection) of the UNCRPD.

Senator Jno Baptiste, who contributed to the 2018/2019 post budget debate, said she is happy to see this reflected in this year’s budget.

“It pleases me to know that we can, as a people, harness the capabilities of all our people for the greater good of our nation. This is a step in the right direction.”

She added that members of the Opposition are committed to doing their part in this regard and to embrace those with disabilities.
