Having the friendship of the People’s Republic of China is comforting, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has said.
This he said during the official opening of the Yorke Valley Bridge in Layou on Friday 13 July 2018. The bridge which was damaged after the collapse of the Matthieu Dam in July 2011 and the government of China funded its reconstruction to the tune of eleven million dollars.
The bridge project commenced in 2016 headed by China Railway 14th Bureau Group Corporation Limited. Scheduled to be completed in September 2017, Hurricane Maria’s passage delayed but did not stop construction as it was finished shortly afterward.
Mr. Skerrit said the government and people of Dominica are profoundly grateful to China for its continued friendship, commitment and assistance.
“It is comforting, as a leader of a small country, to know that when you go to bed and you wake up and there’s a disaster, that there’s a friend who will not have to wait for you to call, they reach out to you and say and that is China to Dominica.”
Mr. Skerrit explained that submissions were made to the Chinese following the destruction caused in Layou following the dam’s collapse. The Chinese, he said, went a step further not only granting their request.
“It is the Chinese government, the ambassador who came forward and said we will not only give you what you requested but we will also build you a bridge in Layou to replace the one that was damaged. They offered us the bridge in addition to the other interventions, the building of homes etc.”
The Prime Minister said the People’s Republic of China is committed to assisting Dominica adding, “these are the kinds of friends which this government has cultivated and harnessed over the years. There is no other entity in Dominica that can boast of having such friends in high places and big places.”
In friendship, he said, there must be sincerity.
