Alick Athanaze, 19, scored a blistering century to take Dominica to victory over St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the 2018 Windward Islands Senior Men’s 50 Overs Cricket Tournament Championship.
In the tournament finals held on Wednesday 30 May 2018, Dominica won the toss and chose to bat, which saw the team to 215 runs all out in 45 overs, with Athanaze scoring 101 runs, Kavem Hodge 38 and Liam Sebastien 22.
Star bowlers for St. Vincent included Obed McCoy with 4 wickets for 17 runs in 4.1 overs and Casmond Walters who took 3 wickets for 25 runs.
In response chasing 216 for the championship, St. Vincent made 200 all out in 40 overs. Top scorer was fast bowler Delorn Johnson with 37 runs. Donwell Hector chipped in with 36, Kenneth Dembar with 24 and Casmond Walters with 22 were the other scorers for St. Vincent.
While bowling, Hodge and Sebastien captured a combined 6 wickets for 77 runs in 18 overs to help carry Dominica over the line.
The tournament, which started on May 20th, saw the participation of teams from Dominica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and St. Lucia. Matches were played in St. Lucia at the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground and the Mindoo Phillip Park.
Earlier this year, Athanaze ended the ICC Under-19 World Cup as the tournament’s top scorer with 418 runs, however the West Indies Team did not make it to the playoffs.
