Dominica’s participation at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Sydney Australia will start off with Valerian Spicer as she competes in the boxing ring.
While Spicer will step into the ring on Saturday 7 April 2018 at 12:17 pm in Australia, Dominicans here will be able to view the games this evening, Friday 6 April 2018 at 10:17 pm local time.
Spicer has been drawn against Scotland’s Vikki Glover in the Women’s 57kg round of 16.
Speaking to the media team of the Dominica Olympic Committee, Spicer said she is confident and positive ahead of the bout.
“This is my 2nd Commonwealth Games so I’m a lot more experienced that I was four years ago. I’ve trained really hard for this, there’s no one in my category I can’t beat if I’m performing so I’m gonna be going out there and doing my best,” she said.
Spicer said her training for the games varied as she prepared for her second Commonwealth Games.
“Three or four times a week I’ll do interval hill sprints, two strengthening addition-ing sessions a week. Roughly around five boxing sessions a week wich is sparring, technical work, fitness, Also on top of that competition as well, so need all those things in place and I’ve been hitting all my targets for these things so I’m in a good place,” she said.
Spicer is not alone in the Games as her husband is her head coach; something she said is good for her.
“He’s always on at me so there’s no skipping any sessions, he produces the best out of me. So yeah we work as a good team,” she beamed.
