The Ministry of Planning through the Physical Planning Division continues to host numerous trainings for builders and contractors as the country now enters the reconstruction phase post Hurricane Maria.
Development Control Officer at the Physical Planning Division, Naomi Dorival stated during an interview with Dominica Vibes on Tuesday 5 December, 2017, that the training is now focused on builders and contractors.
“We are focusing on them because we have recognized that people have started the reconstruction process and we just want to emphasize certain practices that will allow the structure to be safe and protect the structural integrity of the building,” Dorival said.
A document has been put together with assistance from Engineers Without Borders’ representatives, where studies and information addresses failures found during the post Maria building damage assessment, she revealed.
“So based on the information we have gathered so far form the building damage assessment and the common failures that were observed during this assessment it really became critical to go back to the builders and contractors to ensure that those failures would be addressed during the reconstruction process,” she added.
Dorival said that although the document is not necessarily new, it now holds a lot of critical information needed in the rebuilding process.
“A lot of the technical information from the document came from the Safe Shelter Initiative and the Informal Housing Retrofit and Safe Construction Pilot Project that has been administered in the past years. So basically it’s a compilation of those documents and also new information that we have deemed to be critical in the rebuilding process,” Dorival said.
