Former leader of the United Workers’ Party (UWP) Earl Williams believes that Sam Raphael has placed himself in a position to be blackmailed by the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) amid accusations of wrongdoing by the UWP.
Williams, who spoke from New York with radio talk show host Matthias Peltier Jr. on Thursday 13 July 2017, said the DLP had this information “for over a year” however knew they could not use it because there was no “nexus”.
“They have their legal advice, they have Tony Astaphan, if that information was that credible Tony Astaphan would be the one on the radio not Sam,” he said.
Williams claimed that when the DLP realized they had “nothing to link the two because that story is absurd, UWP wasn’t in power, they used Sam”.
Mr. Raphael, he said, was used to make a “nuisance of himself because Skerrit don’t forget people”.
“You yourself said they stole the election, they bribed people and do all that, you don’t see Skerrit have to get his way to humiliate you and embarrass you in public and now have evidence against you now that they can blackmail you at any time because they have evidence that you commit a crime of money laundering,” Williams said.
He said if the information revealed by Mr. Raphael could implicate the UWP of any wrongdoing, he would not be the “bearer of that information”.
“I can tell that to you Matt knowing the operation of how Labour Party operates I can tell that to you…They are making a nuisance out of him, that is why he is there giving that information, no other reason,” Williams said.
Mr. Raphael on Monday July 10 2017 in a YouTube video released amounts he alleges to have received on the behalf of the UWP for the 2005 general elections campaign financing. These amounts he alleges were received for diplomatic passports promised to the financers if the UWP had won the elections.
Current leader of the Opposition Lennox Linton has accused Mr. Raphael of trying to destroy the UWP under his leadership claiming that it is was personal attack on him.
