A Former Magistrate in Dominica has said that the country is not equipped to find any real solutions to issues of youth violence.
Tiyani Behanzin, who has been dubbed by many as a ‘strong-arm’ in minimizing youth violence on the island, believes that the answers to issues of youth violence lie within the intellect of the same young persons.
During his address at a youth symposium on the topic ‘Youth Violence and the Law’, Behanzin said that the contribution of these same young people is critical in finding the solutions.
“I have lost hope with those of the older generations who are grappling with the issue of youth violence and the law, and I think that we’re not equipped to be able to provide any real solutions and I think when we have an impasse, we need to look to the young people to make them contribute…”
He said that the influence by international cultures on our youth is also a major barrier in dealing with the issue of Youth Violence.
“Technology is what defines who we have become. And in that confusion sometimes, is a young person trying to find and define for themselves some identity and that creates some unique problems. The system that has defined us has never really accepted us as an equal player as they fashion for us the societies that we now run and manage and that has to cause conflict in terms of our identity”, he said.
Behanzin, who sat on the bench for approximately one year in Dominica, was the initiator of a Peace Conference in Wesley and was also the featured speaker at many youth seminars, conferences and rallies.
