Two athletes will represent Dominica at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.
Speaking to Dominica Vibes on Monday 18 July 2016 President of the Dominica Olympic Committee (DOC) Felix Wilson said a male and female athlete will represent Dominica at the games.
Yordanys Durañona-Garcia, a Cuban born triple jumper who resides in Dominica and switched allegiance to Dominica in 2011, according to Wilson, qualified for Rio 2016 in the Triple Jump.
“Yordanys lives in Dominica but he trains in Mexico,” Wilson said.
His International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) athlete profile cites his best indoor performance as 15.79 seconds in February 2012 while his best indoor performance is 17.20 seconds in August 2014.
Thea Lafond, who Wilson said is an “unqualified female athlete”, will also represent the island in the Triple Jump. She trains in the Unites States where she is currently a student at the University of Maryland.
According to the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) GAMES OF THE XXXI OLYMPIAD RIO 2016 Rio de Janeiro, BRA 12-21 August 2016 (Athletics) Qualification System and Entry Standards, “[National Olympic Committees] NOCs with no male or female qualified athlete or relay team will be allowed to enter their best male athlete and their best female athlete in one athletic event each, with the exception of the Combined Events, 10,000m and 3000m Steeplechase”.
Both athletes have represented Dominica in various international sporting events.
Wilson said the team is expected to be in Rio by August 2, 2016 under the leadership of DOC’s treasurer Phillip White.
The 2016 Olympic Games will run from August 5 to 21.
