Faiza Charles Sylvester, the daughter of former prime minister of Dominica, Pierre Charles, has said the decision to rename the island’s main airport in honor of her father and former prime minister Roosevelt Douglas is fitting.

On Monday, 27 October 2014, hundreds of Dominicans gathered at the car park of the Melville Hall Airport in Marigot for the ceremony to officially rename the airport the Douglas Charles Airport, a decision taken by the Dominica Labour Party government of which both fallen leaders were members.

“The names Pierre Charles and Roosevelt Douglas will once again receive not just national but international recognition, they will now become household names to all who travel to and through our amazing country,” she noted.

Mrs. Charles Sylvester noted that it is because of her father’s vision the country remains afloat.

“This is our opportunity to re-evaluate our reaction to the decisions that may not particularly be our favorite but which were ultimately lead to our benefits”.

“Standing on the outside looking in we all have many opinions what my father would want, what he would say however none of us are fortunate enough to have such intel because he was and will always be in a league of his own. However, the fact remains that without his strong will to push through for us we would not be in the state of stability that we are in today,” she added.

Mrs Charles-Sylvester noted that the former prime ministers “shared an unconditional friendship, they went through numerous ups and downs together and even shared similar untimely passing’s it is absolutely fitting that they are remembered together as they always were”.

Mrs. Charles Sylvester further described the decision to honor her father as “one that is humbling”.

The secondary school and boulevard in Grand Bay there were also named in Pierre Charles’ honor.

“We already know how much of a pillar he was to the Grand Bay constituency and as such his legacy has been highlighted through landmarks such as such as the Pierre Charles secondary school and the Pierre Charles boulevard however allowing the rest of Dominica to remember him every time we mention our airport means the world to us,” she noted.
