On Thursday June, 19th 2014, a new and dynamic youth led foundation will be launched in an effort to raise awareness on the challenge of Sickle Cell disease in Dominica and how the youth can be empowered to make a difference in that regard.
The launching ceremony of Sickle Cell Cares Foundation will take place at the U.W.I Auditorium in Bath Estate, commencing at 5:00 p.m.
The Sickle Cell Cares Foundation was founded in January 2013 by Kellyn George who hails from the community of Mahaut.
Ms George experienced the trials of Sickle Cell disease throughout her childhood days. However these trials have made Ms. George a stronger, wiser person and she has grown to become a Champion for empowering others to conquer this disease.
Presently a core group of six individuals spearhead the work of the foundation, with the support of an ever expanding cadre of volunteers as well as partner organizations including the National Youth Council of Dominica.
The Sickle Cell Cares Foundation plans to develop its support initiative by introducing financial support to patients, counseling and mental health support to patients and their families, and bridging the gap between patients and their healthcare providers by establishing a patient-doctor network.
