The Cooperative Division celebrates Junior Cooperative Week

The Cooperative Division will observe Junior Cooperative Week for 2019 this week from January 26th to February 1st .
One of the main activities for the week is consultation on the Junior Cooperatives ( the School’s Savings Program) which will be held on  Wednesday 30th January from 9 am to 12:30 pm at the Public Service Union (PSU) building on valley road in Roseau.
Over forty primary and six secondary schools are currently a part of the School’s Savings Program and the total  deposits, shares and retained earnings to date exceeds $400,000.00. The program encourages a habit of thrift within the students and provides an opportunity to promote: the cooperative principles; values and; practices among students also it serves as an avenue to ensure sustainability in the cooperative sector in Dominica.
In addition, there are two Junior Cooperatives CUPS Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society Ltd and the Grandbay Secondary School Junior Cooperative.
The Junior Cooperatives week of activities are being observed under the theme “Building Resilience Through Junior Cooperative”.
Three main objectives of the consultation are to: strengthen the school’s savings program; to encourage the formation of other forms of school cooperatives as a means of creating more opportunities for the involvement of students in the cooperative movement and; recognizing the contribution of teacher guides.
According to a press release, one of the many aspects of the consultation is the  recognition of long serving Teacher Guides  from the East, South and West Cooperative Districts.
The Keynote speaker at the consultation will be Executive Director in the Ministry of Commerce Enterprise and Small Business Development Mr Alexander Stephenson. More over, there will be addresses by the Minister of Ecclesiastical Affairs and Gender Affairs Lady Catherine Daniel and an address from an official representative from the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development.
Other activities planned to promote the Savings Program include radio programs and school based activities which will encompass talks by Cooperative Officers at special assemblies and Cooperative Display Corners.
