Work continues to progress on renovation works at the Roseau Cathedral Bishop Gabriel Malzaire has said.
The project, to restore the Cathedral which was 159 years old, commenced in 2012 with the removal of items in the Cathedral and the preparation of St Gerard’s Hall as a place of worship.
The second phase involved the removal and disposal of the asbestos material on the roof, while the third phase involved strengthening the foundations and construction of new concrete columns to support the weight of the new roof.
“We are at the stage of placing the roof, the covering,” he explained to Dominica Vibes on Tuesday 9 May 2017.
This part of the project, which began in January 2017, will take thirteen (13) months to complete. It will be done in two stages; the basement of the roof and the roof covering.
He informed that following this will be the placement of doors, windows, flooring and choir loft along with other finishing works, as well as another major part of the project which is the ceiling.
“Once that is done, we would be on the home stretch,” Bishop Malzaire said.
However what is required is money as raising funds for such a big project has been the greatest challenge.
“In fact, the present project we have at the moment we had to take a loan to accomplish it and so that will see us through, but we are still in the process of raising more funds so that the other parts of the project we will not have to delay on it.”
He therefore called on members of the church community to contribute financially to the renovation works.
“We are still in the Easter Season and of course we are celebrating the resurrection of Christ. We are encouraged to always live as people of resurrection and people full of life and people trying to live a Christian life so I want to encourage everyone to seek first the Kingdom.”
At a press conference in July 2016 Bishop Malzaire said he anticipated that renovation works on the Roseau Cathedral will be completed by June 2018.
