Loik Charles Makes History As He becomes Dominica’s First Blind University Graduate

Loik Charles has once again made history as he became the country’s first blind student to graduate from University.

The 26-year-old, who is visually impaired, graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) on Saturday, May 07th, in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a minor in Marketing.

Commenting on his achievement, Charles stated that he feels elated and ecstatic.

“I feel like it is something that I have worked hard towards, and I am thankful that God has blessed me to be able to see that day and to accomplish this,” Charles expressed.

Charles expressed that there were also challenging times during his studies, but he explained that God always came through.

He also intends to further his education in the not too distant future. He continued stating, that, however, if opportunities arrive sooner, then he has no problem taking those up.

Meanwhile, the Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities congratulated Loik on his achievement and described him as a typical example of what is possible and can be achieved through inclusive education and has “blazed the trail” for many to follow.

Stating that this is a major accomplishment, the association expressed that this demonstrates that with the necessary and appropriate facilities, environment, technology, resources, and necessary support; persons with disabilities can access an inclusive, quality, primary, secondary, and tertiary education on an equal basis with others, and able to realize their educational goals.
