Opening Ceremony

The “Strengthening the Disaster Management Capacity of Women” in the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and the Commonwealth of Dominica (GUYDOM) Project launched its week of activities with an opening ceremony on November 22nd.

Through the collaboration with the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica, the GUYDOM Project, facilitated by the United Nations Development (UNDP) Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, with the support of the Government of Japan, is engaging and educating the general public with a visibility blitz which will run until Friday, November 26th.

The project under the theme “Preparing communities today for disaster resilience tomorrow” aims to support hazard-prone communities, especially vulnerable groups such as women strengthening disaster and climate resilience and enhancing sustainable livelihoods within communities in Dominica Guyana.

Minister for the Blue and Green Economy, Agriculture and National Food Security, Hon. Fidel Grant paid tribute to women farmers on the island for their invaluable contribution to Dominica’s food security.

He stated that the GUYDOM project is very timely and that they are grateful for the interventions in the lives of farmers who are considered the backbone of society. Hon. Grant then called on all farmers to register with the ministry and utilize the free services and support.

He further stated farming should be treated as a business and urged all farmers to join an association as there must be structure.

Following the virtual session, the UNDP scheduled various entertaining and informative activities for the week. Namely, two radio programs airing on Vibes Radio.

The highlight-of-the week will be the selection of the Farming Champions from four agricultural districts across the island.

Twenty-five farmer nominees have been selected following rigorous criteria in collaboration with the extension officers of the Division of Agriculture. Eight winners will be announced at the Closing Ceremony on November 26th and hosted via UWI TV.
