Plant Protection & Quarantine Unit confirms the presence of the Giant African Snail in Jimmit

The Plant Protection and Quarantine Unit have confirmed the presence of the Giant African Snail in the community of Jimmit.

Plant Protection Officer, Nelson Laville said the unit has undertaken a quick response to this confirmation, by engaging in rapid surveillance and baiting exercises from Wednesday.

“The Unit has undertaken a quick response to this confirmation, by engaging in a rapid surveillance and baiting exercises from Wednesday and has already planned community-wide outreach activities for distribution of information and support materials and undertaking nocturnal surveillance,” Laville said.

He said, “Persons residing in Jimmit are encouraged in the meantime to assist the Unit by undertaking their own surveys within their immediate backyards and enclosed spaces and most importantly reporting the sighting to the Division of Agriculture Plant Protection and Quarantine Unit within the Botanic Gardens at telephone numbers 266-3807 or 266-3802”.

To date, the Giant African Snail was confined to the North (Paix Bouche and environs) and Stockfarm/Bellevue Rawle areas.
