Dominicans are expected to reap great benefits from a new geothermal plant when it comes to fruition by end of 2022.
Ambassador to the OAS, His Excellency Dr. Vince Henderson says geothermal energy is the only way that Dominica can really transition in an efficient way from diesel generation to renewable energy.
He described this as overall benefits while the direct benefits would be a reduction in tariffs among others.
“Direct benefits to Dominicans and consumers, clearly we will see a reduction in tariff, I hate to say how much, I don’t like to quantify these things because you never know until it’s done. But what we know for a fact is that it will cost us about half of what it costs Domlec to produce energy using diesel generators, so that already we know.”
The sole power company on the island, DOMLEC, will still be responsible for transmitting the power to the citizens across the island.
“They’ll take it from Laudat at the geothermal power plant and they will distribute it throughout Dominica. They will not be able to make any profit on it, they will have to treat it just as a fuel surcharge, the only thing is that fuel surcharge goes up and down and geothermal will not go up and down. We will know what the price will be over time and that is what we will negotiate with Domlec.”
So we will see a real benefit to consumers, we will see a reduction in the cost of electricity and if the other things that we working on which you are aware of and we can talk about as we go down, the transmission lines and so forth that we looking at, if we can get this done it means we can maximize the use of geothermal power and really significantly reduce the cost of electricity,” Ambassador to the OAS, His Excellency Dr. Vince Henderson says.
