President of the Commonwealth of Dominica, His Excellency Charles Savarin was the first to receive the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine on Friday.
H.E Savarin was accompanied by the Minister of Health, Dr. Irving McIntyre, the Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Kent Edwards, and first Lady, Clara Savarin who also took the first dose of the vaccine shot.
Head of the Government Information Service Daryl Titre was also on hand to receive a first dose of the vaccine.
After his shot of the vaccine, Savarin urged other Dominicans to make themselves available for inoculation of the vaccine.
“I’ve heard some misgivings. But vaccinations are not new,” Charles Savarin said.
“We’ve been vaccinated against polio, we’ve been vaccinated against smallpox, against a number of epidemics and pandemics and I would urge all Dominicans to take advantage of this opportunity to increase the immunity of the population against COVID-19.”

The Government of Dominica received 70,000 doses of the AstraZeneca Vaccine on Tuesday which will be used to vaccinate 35,000 Dominicans.
Frontline workers, the elderly, the most vulnerable are among the first expected to be vaccinated when the roll-out program begins on the 22nd of February.
