The Government of Dominica has introduced new measures to assist in achieving housing policy goals.

Minister for Housing, Reginald Austrie made mention of the Title by Registration Act which allows for the reduction in title registration fees.

“This addresses the issue of access to land for housing by review of the cost of the registration of those titles. Many individuals own land or promise of land, but the 12.5% has proven in many instances to be prohibitive and so you have many Dominicans with land but nothing to show for it in terms of a legal document because they could not afford to register those properties,” Minister for Housing, Reginald Austrie said.

The government announced in its last budget, a reduction of 8.5% which runs from September 1st, 2020, to August 2nd, 2021.

The Minister said “We’re hoping that this measure will encourage and urge individuals to get their properties registered because there are many many benefits of having a registered title in your hands. It gives to the opportunity to raise the necessary financing that is required because no bank will accept your land paper if you don’t have a title to it.”

He further added, “Many of us wanting to improve our conditions but because of that limitation we have not been able to and we’re hoping that with this measure we can see many people not only improving on their homes, but taking advantage of other opportunities that require you to call on the banking institution for some support”
