The Government of Dominica has taken a decision to cancel the 2021 Carnival celebrations regarding concerns of the growing COVID-19 pandemic.

The announcement was made by Dominica’s Tourism Minister, Denise Charles at a COVID-19 press briefing on Wednesday 02, December 2020.

“Fellow Dominica and patrons, I wish to inform you that after much deliberations and consultation the government of the Commonwealth of Dominica has taken the responsible decision to cancel our annual carnival Mas Dominque 2021,” the Minister noted.

She further informed, “We are aware of the historical, cultural, social, and economic relevance of our carnival season. However, during this covid-19 era, health and safety continue to be our priorities. Therefore following discussion with key stakeholders it was concluded that holding events with mass gatherings may pose a serious threat to our health and this is a risk we are not willing to take.”

Charles said this period will be used to strategize on enhancing other events and festivals for 2021/22 and beyond.
