The Goodwill Primary School were the recipients of 40 tablets donated by Rubis West Indies Limited on Tuesday.
This is not the first contribution from Rubis who after the passage of Hurricane Maria developed a strong relationship with the Goodwill Primary School by building an auditorium to enable students to return to school. This time Rubis has donated 40 Alcatel 1T 7 inch tablets at a cost of $14,000.
Speaking at the donation ceremony Country Representative for Rubis Dominica, Nicholas Dodds, noted, that in the event physical learning becomes impossible the company feels that this donation will be essential.
“I heard on the news this morning that in Venezuela, all in-person classes have been cancelled until 2021, and I ask myself what happens if something like that happens in Dominica.”
Dodds noted the possibility of another lockdown situation and the importance the tablets pose. “The fact that we are opened up, there is a possibility that we could return to a lockdown situation.” He added, “If that being the case, I am very sure that these tablets that we are handing over today will go a long way, towards preparing both the staff and the students for online leaning.”
Dodds also called on the business community to play their part. “I want to take this opportunity to call on the business world to actually follow suite.” And although he acknowledges the impacts of Covid 19 on the economy, he believes that investing in the education of children is of paramount importance. “We know that these are very difficult times with Covid -19. It’s not easy for us, there are a lot of other commitments that we have, and our business is equally impacted by the onslaught of Covid-19.” He continued, “Nevertheless, we saw the need to invest in students. We quite often say that the children are our future. I believe that if they are our future we have to invest in them no matter how difficult times may be.”
