Natalia Matthew, 10, of Bath Estate has died as a result of injuries sustained in a vehicular collision on Wednesday 6 June 2018.
She was crossing the Bath Estate main road on her way home when a white Mazda van struck her at about 5:45PM.
Police public relations officer Simon Edwards, confirmed in a report to the media on Thursday 7 June 2018, that the collision involved Giovani Vaughn Garraway, 21, of Cochrane.
“According to the information, Giovani Garraway was driving pick-up registration number FA073 in a west to east direction on the Bath Estate main road when he overtook a moving vehicle travelling in the same direction,” Edwards report indicates.
“At that instant, Natalia Matthew was crossing the road ahead in a north to south direction in front of a vehicle parked on the side of the main road. The pickup hit Natalia Matthew who sustained bodily injuries,” the report further states.
She was transported to the Accident and Emergency Department of the Princess Margaret Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries and officially pronounced dead by a medical practitioner.
The report further indicates that her body has since been transported to the Lyndhurst Funeral Home as police investigations continue.
Her mother Lili Matthew was too emotional to speak with Vibes news when our news team visited the home on Thursday morning.
Her father Ronald Matthew worked as a bailiff at the Magistrate’s Court but is currently recovering from a stroke.
The driver of the vehicle was also hospitalized for injuries he sustained after the collision.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development posted a condolence message on its Facebook Page this morning.
It said they “stand in solidarity with the principal, teachers and students of the school who are mourning the loss of Natalia, described as a pleasant, helpful and conscientious student”.
She was a student of the Roseau Primary School.
