Relief distribution of food supplies may be fully handed over to the Red Cross, as the prime minister calls on citizens to be positive and optimistic.
This was announced by the Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, at the daily press briefing held on Wednesday, October 18th, 2017.
Mr. Skerrit, who was referring to the his meeting with Regional Director of Red Cross, Walter Cotte Witigan, state that they had discussed numerous important components of the relief distribution and recovery phase.
“One of the things that we will be discussing further, on my request is the possibility of the Red Cross taking over the relief aspect for the Government, where the food supplies are concerned and getting the food supplies to the communities,” he stated.
Meanwhile, he asked Dominicans to remain positive and to be their neighbours ‘keepers in this period of recovery saying that negativity will not assist or improve theirs or the country’s current situation calling on persons to be positive, optimistic and hopeful.
Mr. Skerrit went on to state that it is a time for us to help those who incapable of helping themselves and those who are less fortunate.
“Have we as citizens, as residents in the villages accounted for every senior citizen? Have we been to their homes? If you know that there are some seniors who need water, can we not ourselves fetch the water for those senior citizens, rather than relying on the state agencies to do so? We need to be our neighbor’s keeper in these times, and the regional and international communities are here to assist us, but the responsibility of getting ourselves of the ground is left to us as Dominicans. So we have to carry the brunt of the responsibility and carry out the task,” he said.
