The Dominica State College will host the fourth annual Windward Islands Debating Competition (WIDC) next year. The participating colleges will be the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College from St. Lucia, the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College and the T.A Marryshow Community College representing Grenada.
The Dominica State College (DSC) Literary and Debating Society participated in the third annual Windward Islands Debating Competition in Grenada over the weekend.
According to Coach and Advisor of the Dominica State College Literary and Debating Society, Trudy Christian, Dominica is the last Windward Island to host this competition and the DSC team hopes to regain the trophy.
In this year’s competition the Dominica State College competed against: the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College from St. Lucia and the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College.
The participating teams competed in two rounds: the semi- final and final round within a two days period which was the Mar. 1, 2019 and Mar. 2, 2019.
The students who represented the Dominica State College are Elleen Commodore, Kodie Jean-Jacques, Abiyomhi Joseph and Keauntae Harrigan.
The DSC Debate Team has won this competition two consecutive times. In 2017 and 2018. Unfortunately the team was unsuccessfully in obtaining the trophy this year as they were defeated by the Grenada team in the semifinal round. Grenada proceeded to win the final round against the St Lucia team and is now the champion team.
Trudy Christian says the Dominica team were commended for their effort and representation. She feels that with the experience gained from this competition and that which will be gained from upcoming local competitions, some members of the team may get the chance to compete in the WIDC again with better results.
Miss Christian implores all stakeholders and interested parties to step forward to assist with the staging of the Windward Islands Debating Competition in Dominica next year.
