Four (4) students were awarded scholarships with funds raised by the Dominica Cancer Society’s Youth Arm on Wednesday 15 August 2018.
In presenting the scholarship awards downstairs the Government Headquarters in Roseau, Member of the Dominica Cancer Society Kathleen Cornelius said the organization was able to raise some funds and will give scholarships to four deserving students.
“We have one whose parent succumbed to the disease, one whose grandmother succumbed and we have two persons from the primary school with us today whose parents are currently undertaking treatment,” Cornelius informed.
The scholarship awardees are Anna-Lee Carty, Miah Bully, Charltan Charles and Tafari Hawse.
Mrs. Cornelius said many of Dominica Cancer Society members realized the impact that the diagnosis has on their children, “we began the Dominica Cancer Society Youth Arm”.
The Youth Arm has two functions; to provide support and counselling through a trained counselor for children who have been directly affected by cancer.
“Apart from providing support in those two aspects, we also provide homework support to children who may be challenged with some form of academic assignments,” she informed.
Additionally, the society raises funds to assist the children who have been touched by cancer “and our main activity is that we do cake sales and small fund raisers”.
Mrs. Cornelius added this initiative is the Cancer Society’s way of giving back to those affected by the disease.
