The Dominica Football Association (DFA) has awarded scholarships and assistance to nineteen (19) students totaling over forty-six thousand dollars ($46, 000) ahead of the 2018-2019 academic school year.
The presentations were made on Wednesday 15 August by DFA’s President, Glen Ettienne at the Football House in Bath Estate.
Ettienne described the ceremony as “significant since we are giving back to our very own” and in light of the devastating effect Hurricane Maria had on the finances of Dominicans and the economy.
Nine students; Errol Blaize, Montel James, Fitz Jolly, Nerissa William, Mitchlin Morgan, Nick Anthony, Stacey Hill, Britney Stoute and Gilles Mitchell received scholarships to attend university.
One full scholarship was awarded to high school student Aurnell Esprit while the scholarships awarded to Audell Laville and Quinton Moise in 2017 will continue.
One off contributions ranging from $5000.00 to $500.00 were made to Tyanna Nicholas, Joan Pascal, Jordan Benjamin, Malik Valentine, Malachi Joseph and Clevaugn John Lewis and Avery Jno Baptiste.
Three students of staff members also received contributions towards their education.
It is the second consecutive year that the Dominica Football Association is making such a presentation to its footballers and according to Ettienne, the association is “not only concerned about the mere organization of football leagues and competition; we take a keen interest in the holistic development and well-being of all our players and even those who have not participated in our leagues”.
He urged the recipients to make good use of the funds received and give their best performance on the field and in the classroom.
Mr. Ettiene also encouraged the parents to assist the students and monitor their progress.
