Shereen Carbon, 11, of the Ebenezer Seventh Day Adventist Primary School is the winner of the 2018 Kweyol Spelling Bee competition.
Carbon emerged as winner over five other students in the competition held on Wednesday 16 May 2018 at the Alliance Francaise.
She took first place after going head to head in a tie breaker with the Paix Bouche representative after the elimination rounds.
Rielle LeBlanc of the Paix Bouche Primary School came in second while Hannah Harve of the Goodwill Primary School came in third.
“I am very happy that I am in this position as first place, I was very surprised,” Carbon told Dominica Vibes after the competition.
“I worked very hard each day, I had to spell mostly all the words each day…and it took a long while to learn all of them,” she explained.
Principal of the Ebenezer SDA Primary School, Ursula Edwin stated that Carbon worked hard in preparation for the competition, going on to congratulate her on her win.
“The child studied very hard, she was excited to represent her school and always wanted to be the winner for that Spelling Competition. She worked hard, her parents assisted her very much and her class teacher Miss Keisha Barry. We say congratulations to Shereen Carbon her hard work,” Edwin added.
