First Domestic Insurance has awarded scholarships to six deserving students for the 2017/ 2018 academic school year.
Four previous scholarships were also renewed based on the performance of the students during the previous academic year, while one student received a one-time scholarship of five hundred dollars.
Vinera Valerie, Geory Jno. Baptiste, Justin Alexander, Jahkel Durand, Gefran Reid and Markella Jno. Baptiste were the recipients of the new scholarships, while the scholarships of Coann Lockhart, Meah Purity Andrew, Metin Enrico Brumant and Bernice Lawrence were renewed for another year.
Chairman of Tonge Group of Companies, Curtis Tonge, told the students that education is in an important part of having a successful life.
“Education is key to a good life, more so now than ever before. And for young people, education is a must. It is a must. It’s the only way that we are going to get ahead,” he stated.
Tonge went on to reference the recently presented national budget, stating that while the government has made significant increase in the education, the private sector must play their role in the lives of the public in helping ensure that those who are unable to help themselves are helped.
“The private sector also must play its part, and has played its part over the years, and we will continue to play our part, which is why we are here. We are here because we want to play our part in making certain that persons and children who are not able for whatever reason to go to secondary school, will have the opportunity,” he further noted.
