Attitude to work has been identified as a widespread problem in the workplace that could mean less revenue for Dominica.
Executive Director of the Dominica Employers Federation, Achille Joseph told Dominica Vibes that this “plague right now in Dominica” could cost the island investors and business as an economy becoming increasingly service oriented.
“People’s attitude to work in Dominica is not progressive and it is not encouraging. Probably that’s one of the reasons we are not able to attract the level of foreign investment that we want,” Joseph believes.
“If an investor is showing interest in doing business in the Dominican market and he was to do a little survey here on attitudes and behaviours towards work, most likely we will lose that investment.”
Joseph says this attitude is hard to change, is displayed to customers and could rightfully cost individuals their jobs and businesses their revenue.
“If an employee has a performance shortfall, that is much easier to address than if the employee has a bad attitude.”
The DEF Head says a performance shortfall could be rectified with skill training “but when the person’s behavior is bad, that may be something the person has cultivated [since birth] and that is not easy to change. It may also represent the behavior at home.”
He says employers are often advised “if you have an employee with recurring bad behavior, you may have to look at an exit plan. We would not tell you that if it was an issue of performance.”
He says work attitude and behaviour is a critical problem for business on the island.
“I think this is the number one issue for us. Dominica is moving slowly but surely from a predominantly agriculture and processing state to one of service, it is critical that our attitude is in place because we will turn our customers ,” Joseph warns.
