A Trinidadian company has been engaged to give the government a detailed report on the cost of repairing the Windsor Park Sports Stadium in Roseau.

Minister for Youth, Sports and Constituency Empowerment Justina Charles, while contributing to the 2018/2019 Budget debate at Parliament on Monday 30 July 2018, said the stadium has been of much concern to her Cabinet colleagues as well as persons in the Dominican society.

The stadium suffered tremendous damage to the roof, media center, players’ pavilion, all the stands, all VIP boxes, the light towers, the scoreboard, perimeter walls and the outfield as a result of Hurricane Maria.

Therefore NH International (Caribbean) Limited has been tasked with preparing detailed costings for its complete rehabilitation.

This is important “in anticipation for the need to provide a venue…to host the World Creole Music Festival as we observe our fortieth anniversary of independence this year and also in preparation for hosting international cricket next year,” Charles said.

The rehabilitation work will not only ensure that the stadium will be brought back to ICC standards, but that it will be done in a climate resilient manner.

According to Minister Charles, initial reports indicated that about six million dollars was needed to repair the stadium.

She explained that in the 2017/2018 budget made allocation for a fourth phase of upgrades to the stadium to include upgrading the playing field perimeter lights with ICC complaint flood lights.

“By the time of Hurricane Maria Madam Speaker, this project was at procurement phase and so we will continue to pursue that,” she said.
